Chemical Emission Rate Testing

IEE provides chemical emission rate testing for building materials, furnishings, and equipment including;

  • insulation products: spray polyurethane foam (SPF), glass and mineral fiber, cellulose
  • composite wood products: laminate flooring, plywood, MDF, OSB
  • paints, adhesives, sealants etc.

Measurement of chemical emission rates can be measured in situ using the Field Laboratory Environmental Cell (FLEC), or off-site, using small, medium or large laboratory environmental test chambers.

The chemical emission rate data (µg/m2-h), the quantity (m2) of each indoor finish material, and the outdoor air ventilation rate (m3/h) are input into our proprietary mass balance model to calculate the resulting indoor air concentrations in the design phase prior to purchase and installation of the materials.

These modeled indoor air concentrations are then compared to our proprietary indoor exposure guidelines that are based upon the OEHHA CRELs and include more than 1,000 chemicals. Measuring the chemical emission rates of building materials allows for assessing the contribution that individual materials have on the indoor concentrations

Building material chemical emission rates can also be used to identify materials that are causing high indoor concentrations in existing buildings.
