Professional Biography
Mr. Offermann a member of the indoor air quality committees associated with ASHRAE (Standard 62), AIHA,
ACGIH, ASTM, ISIAQ, USGBC (LEED Program), and the Cal-OSHA Indoor Air Quality Advisory Committee.
Mr. Offermann has 43 year’s experience as an IAQ researcher, building air quality investigator, mitigation planner, healthy
building design consultant, expert witness, technical author, and workshop instructor. He is President of Indoor
Environmental Engineering, a San Francisco based IAQ consulting firm.
As President of Indoor Environmental Engineering, Mr. Offermann directs an interdisciplinary team of environmental
scientists, chemists, and mechanical engineers in indoor air quality investigations and healthy building
design projects. Under Mr. Offermann’s supervision, IEE has developed both pro-active and reactive IAQ measurement
methods and diagnostic protocols. He has been a recipient of State and Federal research grants regarding building
air quality and ventilation field studies (e.g. EPA BASE study of IAQ in office buildings and schools,CEC/CARB California New Home Study), tracer gas measurement
techniques, in situ chemical emission rate measurements, and development of indoor air quality measurement instrumentation.
Prior to starting Indoor Environmental Engineering, Mr. Offermann was a Staff Scientist with the Building Ventilation
and Indoor Air Quality Program, Energy and Environment Division, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Berkeley, California.
Mr. Offermann developed and instructs IAQ related professional development seminars including “Indoor Air
Quality: Tools for Schools,” an EPA one-day air quality management workshop for school officials, teachers, and
maintenance personnel, and the Building Operator Certification (BOC) “Indoor Air Quality” Training Workshops,
sponsored by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council.
He has published extensively and lectured frequently on the subject of IAQ, ventilation, air cleaning, and product
emission testing. He is both a licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer and a Certified Industrial Hygienist.
